For Global Geoparks,

submitted a full application

On Oct 20, 2008, Itoigawa was awarded the first ‘Japanese Geopark’ label as well as the entitlement to apply for the Global Geoparks Network. Below is the list of the first ‘Japanese geopark’.

  2. 箇条書き項目Lake Toya and Mt. Usu (Usu volcano and hot springs)

  3. 箇条書き項目SanIn coast(subsiding coast of volcanic rocks)

  4. 箇条書き項目‘South Alps’(accretionary wedge with periglacier deposit and Median Tectonic Line)

  5. 箇条書き項目Cape Muroto (Mesozoic-Cenozoic accretionary wedge)

  6. 箇条書き項目Shimabara Peninsula(active volcanoes and hot springs)

  7. 箇条書き項目Itoigawa(Itoigawa-Shizuoka tectonic line and jades)


The JGN is a domestic version of the Global Geoparks Network, established with the support of UNESCO. From fiscal 2009 starting next April 1, domestic candidate sites for Global Geopark designation will be selected from among the regions on the JGN list. More and more areas are expected to put hands up as candidate of new Japanese Geoparks members.
