Itoigawa Geopark
Itoigawa Geopark
Followings are the main features of Itoigawa Geopark.
On the tectonic line: Itoigawa is situated at the northern terminus of the great fault line, Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line, geologically separating North-Eastern and South-Western Japan. Itoigawa Geopark is very on the both parts of Japan with unique geological diversity.
An incredible altitude and environmental range: The city covers from sea level to the top of the Japan Alps (nearly 3,000M high), with corresponding wide varieties of geology and topography.
Wide range of geologic ages: The whole geologic ages, from Proterozoic to Cenozoic thorough Paleozoic and mesozoic are represented in the area.
Various formations of rocks: Rocks roughly devided into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Here Geological diversity gives many different formation types of rocks.
Fascinating stories of human and the earth: There is intimately intertwined relationships of man and nature. For example, as early as 4,000years B.C., jade craft centers existed in the Itoigawa area. Processed jadestones were distributed to whole area of Japan and some have even reached Korean Peninsula.
