The speech of Japanese Geoparks Network joining commemoration ceremony by Toru Yoneda, mayor of Itoigawa City

    I was just informed that Itoigawa was approved as one of the first Japanese Geopark and also entitled to apply for Global Geoparks Network. Japanese Geoparks aims at preserving geological heritages of significance and contribute these for education and sustainable development of the local-area.

I strongly believe that constant efforts of citizens as well as incomparable heritages of Itoigawa was evaluated. I would like to appreciate to the effort of predecessors, citizens, prefecture and every single person who concerned Itoigawa Geopark.

From now on, to accomplish the aim to join Global  Geoparks, further work is requiring. Here I sincerely ask for everybody’s continuous corporation and warm support to make the name Itoigawa Geopark worldwide.

There was a telephone call for Yoneda, mayor of Itoigawa City, from the Japanese Geopark Committee at 5:05 p.m. on October 20, 2008. Itoigawa was awarded the first ‘Japanese Geopark’ label as well as the entitlement to apply for the Global Geoparks Network.

The JGN is a domestic version of the Global Geoparks Network, established with the support of UNESCO.This time, Toya Lake (Hokkaido) and the Shimabara Peninsula (Nagasaki Prefecture)  passed, too.

An English application form to GGN has been submitted to the bureau of GGN. After processing the whole assessment including on-the-spot investigation, decision is suppose to be made.We’re expecting the result  around next autumn in 2009.
